More Dubai observations

Lifestyle. Much like Newman, Dubai is generally an indoor society to avoid the heat. Hence the popularity of the shopping malls, cinemas, etc. People don’t walk anywhere as the distances are long and the heat can be oppressive especially if it’s humid. It’s even more dusty than Newman although the dust is white so doesn’t show up quite as much. We’d probably have a grey and white border collie rather than black and pink. Our brown dog manages to be brown and pink 1 hour after being washed. We wouldn’t have to wash them as much if they lived here. See the dust on a parked car.

Would I like to live in this part of the world? I’d love to give it a go for a while. Just don’t know how the female thing would go down if I worked in mining. But English or swimming teaching would be a go.

Etiquette. I’m finding my Asian driven body language gives a different impression here. I tend to look down a lot and not make direct eye contact in new situations. This can be respectful or nonthreatening in certain cultures. Here it is disrespectful not to look people in the eye and hold eye contact so I’m trying to break old habits. Again being blonde I seem to be forgiven a few cultural indescretions.

Dubai observations

General comments about Dubai. English is more widely and better spoken than any other place I’ve been to this year (outside Asia). This is partly because only 15% of the population are Emerati. Most of the service labour is Phillipino, Indian, Paki, etc. And most of the business people are native English speakers – English, American, etc. I haven’t met anyone to actually say shukran to!

Money. Accommodation is expensive compared to European cities but the rooms are so much bigger and much better facilities as everything is new. Food is actually cheaper than Oz. A typical foodhall meal is $10 while this upmarket meal cost me $30. Fresh food is about the same price as home. Taxis are roughly 1/3 to ½ the price of Oz. Flagfall is $1. Which is good as the public transport infrastructure is very new but incomplete. I can only catch taxis from the hotel for example. But they are plentiful and I haven’t had to ring for one yet. The train stations are enclosed and airconditioned by the way – gotta love it!!

Dress. I’ve been wearing my usual tshirts and jeans and no-one looks twice at me. Mind you my dress is not revealing so it’s not offensive to many cultures. My short hair gets me the usual “sir” but that’s fine.

Pastilla

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Am feeling really unwell from Chris’s virus so have had to can my plans for the day. Currently sitting in a Moroccan restaurant at Mall Of Emirates. This is the mall with the indoor ski run. Haven’t risked my health by going inside. Just having a shower and catching a taxi here has exhausted me. Back to the bad old days of CFS.

I had one mission in Dubai and it will seem like a strange one – to taste a Moroccan dish called Pastilla. I have seen it on all the cooking shows on Foxtel (isn’t that idea just masochistic?!). The authentic dish is a pigeon pie basically. Tender cooked pidgeon meat is wrapped in almond infused filo pastry and dusted with liberal amounts of cinnamon and icing sugar. I was really curious as to what my palette would make of the savoury/sweet combination. I have eaten chocolate chicken mole and really enjoyed it.

It’s turned out to be a hilarious exercise. The dish was beautifully presented with a criss cross pattern of cinnamon and icing sugar on a pate shaped filo pastry. As soon as I took a bite I realised my childhood has ambushed any chance of me truly enjoying this dish. As a child one of my favourite treats was something we called cinnamon toast. Slather bread in margarine and a mix of cinnamon and icing sugar and cook under grill. With my first bite of the pastille, I was catapulted back to the kitchen in Port Hedland. Bugger!! The pigeon tasted awesome but any hint of the dusting and I thought I was having a special breakfast. Very funny!!

What the?

Due to previously mentioned illness/fatigue, I spent much of the afternoon watching the Three Musketeers in 3D (great special FX, very average script and plot). First time I’ve been sitting in a movie and a mobile rings and  the person carries on an entire conversation as if there’s nothing wrong with it at all and I won’t kill him. Unbelievable!!

Dubai Fountain

Friday, November 11th, 2011

The Dubai Fountain (also located next to Dubai Mall) runs every 30 minutes with a water and light show to music. I could have watched it all night.

Burj Kalifa

The Burj Kailfa (tallest building in the world) is located next to Dubai Mall and must be experienced up close. It goes up and keeps going up!

Dubai Mall

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

For the afternoon and evening I went to the Dubai Mall. “What?” I hear you screaming at the screen. “You’ve flown half way round the world to an new culture with lots of exciting things to photograph. Why are you going to a shopping centre?”.  Frankly dear reader, because I wanted to and we don’t have them in Newman. Chris came down with a killer virus just before I left Oz and I definitely have a touch of it. I also wanted to check out the Dubai Fountain and largest building in the world – Burj Kalifa. The mall is massive. And I admit I did indulge in some clothes shopping.

Apart from the usual ice skating rink, it has the largest pane of plexiglass in the world wrapped around the aquarium. First time I’ve had the opportunity to do any marine photography. Big lesson, fish move really fast for flash free photography! So I didn’t get any clear images.

And this is a waterfall that reaches from the third floor to the ground.

Now this is town planning

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Gotta love it when roads are built with the future in mind. This is the main drag through town – 6 lanes each way!

Man made islands

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Here’s a side on view of the Palm – the man made island. I think it’s sad that construction has slowed right down on both the Palm Jumeirah and The World. I really thought they would be further progressed since I saw the documentary on their construction which was made a few years ago.

And below is part of The World. I couldn’t tell which countries these were supposed to be!

And finally my apartment was in one of these buildings on the trunk of the Palm.
